Welcome to the Colorado River District Website

The Colorado River District is one of twelve districts that make up the Capitol Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The district is named for the beautiful Colorado River which runs through the middle of the district cutting it almost in half. The Boy Scout program works toward three aims:

  • To Build Character – Developing the Scout’s personal qualities, values, and outlook: honesty, courage, integrity, self-reliance, self-discipline, self-confidence, and self-respect.
  • To Foster Citizenship – Training the Scout on his duties, obligations, privileges, and functions as a citizen and member of his community.
  • To Develop Fitness – Helping the Scout to develop physically, mentally, morally, and emotionally.

The Colorado River District Committee meets on the second Thursday of every month at the Lost Pines Scout Ranch – Lindsey Lodge at 6:00 pm. The Boy Scout and Cub Scout Roundtables meet on second Thursday of every month just after the Committee meeting at 7:00 pm. The Roundtables are an excellent way to meet other leaders and to keep up on what’s going on around the District.

Spring Expo 2010

knight jousting

Mark your calendars!  The annual Colorado River District Spring Expo/Camporee will be March 26 – 28, 2010 and will take place in the usual location – Camp Alma McHenry in Giddings.  This year’s theme is Medieval Knights.  I have attached a copy of the packet including registration and the schedule of events.  The packet will also be available for download from the district website (www.crdistrict.org) by mid-week.

In addition to the regular slate of competition activities, we have added a couple of exciting events to the agenda this year.  The first is a trebuchet competition for the Webelos, Boy Scouts, and Crews.  Full details on this event are included in the attached document.  Please be sure to read the rules for this competition carefully. Adults, please remember that this is a scout competition, not an adult competition; let the scouts do the research and construction – with your close supervision, of course.  We will also have a table-top trebuchet competition for cub scouts!

The second special event this year is for the adults – and the youth.  In the fall, the scout leaders get to judge the youth on their cooking acumen.  This spring, we are going to turn the tables…  The adults will be cooking and the youth will get to judge the adults!  So, scout leaders – bring on your best campfire cooking!  Details for this event are included in the attached packet.

As always, we need units to step up and sponsor events to make this event successful.  Without EVERYONE’S participation, we cannot have a successful Spring Expo/Camporee.  Please look over the events listed in the attached document and email me as soon as possible with the event you want to sponsor.  I will try to update the event list on the website periodically with who is sponsoring them.  Sponsoring an event involves last-minute setup Saturday morning and running the event Saturday afternoon.  As with last fall, I am offering the incentive of first-come-first-serve on picking your camp site if you volunteer for an event or to host the cracker barrel.  I will be posting a map on the web site (www.crdistrict.org) later this week for you to pick your camp site.  When you send your choice for events to sponsor, please indicate your top 3 choices in case someone has already claimed an event.  Also, send your top 4 or 5 camping choices.  I will let you know your event and camp site within a few days after I receive your email.

SPECIAL NEED:  If anyone has water balloon catapults to use for the Catapult event, that we can use, please let me know as soon as possible!!!

I will need as much help on Friday, March 26th as possible during the day to help set up the event field so that the materials for all events are in place before 5:00 p.m. Friday.  Please contact me (email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or by phone: 512-627-0563) if you can help set up on Friday, March 26th during the day.  I will be at the camp to start set up at 9:00 a.m.

We encourage everyone to pre-register your units.  To encourage early registration, pre-registration will cost $7.00 per person (youth and adults).  Pre-registration is open now and will close on Friday, March 19, 2010.  Registration after March 19th, including registration at the Spring Expo/Camporee, will cost $9.00 per person.  Please see the attached document for the registration form.  When paying pre-registration, please make checks payable to Mike Bohlig and send it to me at 107 Martin Meadows, Cedar Creek, TX  78612.  I will send you an email receipt the day I receive your check.  Please include your registration form with this payment.  Please keep a copy of this form and turn in an updated form when you check in.  I know no matter how well you try to plan and how much you try to get your youth and adults to commit to attending, there will be some who won’t commit until the week of the event and there will be others who say they will attend but will drop out at the last minute.  If you register by the early registration date, any last-minute scouts or scouters who wish to join can do so at the pre-registration cost of $7.00 each.  We will also refund registration fees if the number of scouts/scouters is less than you pay for in your pre-registration.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Spring Expo!!!!

Yours in Scouting,

Mike Bohlig, District Camping Chair
